What a delight to share that David Gleason NR9V — the principal behind the AllScan favorites management software and a gifted designer of high-quality radio-over-internet and audio interface devices — was recently a guest on the Ham Radio Workbench podcast.
If you are interested in AllStar, this is a must listen. You’ll not only enjoy the usual banter among the regular hosts, you’ll also gain deeper insight into how AllStar works.. The conversation around all the ways AllStar can be used is a bit, well, mind blowing. If you aren’t very familiar with AllStar, or even if you have a personal AllStar node, I guarantee you’re going to learn new things about AllStar.

I’m particularly appreciative of this intersection of Ham Radio Workbench and AllScan because they got me started soldering. Listening the HRWB convinced me to try making some things. Buying a kit from AllScan gave me the opportunity to try soldering electrical components. I learned a lot, even if my soldering still leaves a lot to be desired!
Here are a few examples of nodes using David’s products (photo courtesy of AllScan.info):

I am an unabashed fan of David’s work. Looking around my amateur radio station in my semi-temporary location, I spot these AllScan hardware products:
- AllScan UCI90 with a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W and a K-1 speaker-microphone (this is a spare node, not currently in service)
- AllScan UCI90 with a Raspberry Pi 4B+ and a K-1 speaker-microphone (ASL node 588412)
- AllScan ANF101 full-duplex AllStar node with a Dell 3040 mini PC and Retevis RT85 radios for TX and RX (ASL node 588418)
I have additional AllScan hardware in my Portland, Oregon location that did not travel with me to my Washington State location. It has all worked brilliantly, especially in my Portland location that is flooded with RF interference. I recommend AllScan products. They are reliable, provide high-quality audio, and affordable. AllScan provides great value for radio amateurs.
