Coffee and radio

“Coffee and radio” ought to be the name of this website! While I’m kidding, there is a grain of truth in this. That’s probably why one of my earlier forays into domain names for radio-focused websites was cupofradio.com (I’ve since abandoned that domain name, even though I still like it).

A few mornings ago, I was driving for — that’s right, for my morning coffee — when I realized the conversation on the local repeater had coffee in almost every exchange. Maybe it was just because it was an early morning informal QSO with a group of regulars I think of as the morning bunch. At that time of the morning, before the sun has come up and the birds are still waking up, coffee is probably one thing most of us have in common.

It makes me wonder if coffee is simply a part of radio culture. You know, those early morning conversations that are made easier by having a hot cup of freshly brewed, aromatic coffee beside the microphone. Also, those evening and late night HF contacts where staying awake to get just one more contact sometimes calls for some coffee or tea.

Where would we be without our caffeine!
